Collocations in Inverted Sentences
What are collocations?
Collocations are combinations of words that commonly appear together in English. They sound natural to native speakers because the words are frequently used as a group.
Examples:
make a decision — tomar uma decisão
take responsibility — assumir responsabilidade
heavy rain — chuva forte
deeply concerned — profundamente preocupado
pay attention — prestar atenção
A collocation is not always translated word for word. For example, make a decision literally means “fazer uma decisão,” but the natural translation in Brazilian Portuguese is tomar uma decisão.
What are inverted sentences?
An inverted sentence changes the usual word order. In a normal English sentence, the subject generally comes before the verb:
I have never seen such a beautiful place.
Eu nunca vi um lugar tão bonito.
In an inverted sentence, an auxiliary verb comes before the subject. This structure is often used for emphasis or in formal English. For example:
Never have I seen such a beautiful place.
Nunca vi um lugar tão bonito.
After negative or restrictive expressions such as never, rarely, seldom, hardly, only and not only, English commonly uses inversion for emphasis.
Common collocations in inverted sentences
1. “Never have I…”
The expression have never seen is a common collocation. In the inverted form, never moves to the beginning, followed by have and the subject.
Never have I seen such a crowded stadium.
Nunca vi um estádio tão lotado.
Never have we experienced such strong winds.
Nunca passamos por ventos tão fortes.
The collocation experience strong winds means passar por ventos fortes or vivenciar ventos fortes.
2. “Rarely do…”
The collocation pay attention means prestar atenção. Because the main verb is in the simple present and there is no auxiliary verb, we use do in the inverted structure.
Rarely do students pay attention to small details.
Raramente os alunos prestam atenção aos pequenos detalhes.
Rarely does he make a serious mistake.
Raramente ele comete um erro grave.
Remember that after do or does, the main verb stays in its base form:
Rarely does she make mistakes.
Not: Rarely does she makes mistakes.
3. “Not only does…”
The structure not only … but also … connects two related ideas. It is often used with the collocations make progress and take responsibility.
Not only did the company make significant progress, but it also gained public trust.
A empresa não apenas fez um progresso significativo, mas também conquistou a confiança do público.
Not only does he take responsibility for his actions, but he also offers practical solutions.
Ele não apenas assume a responsabilidade por suas ações, mas também oferece soluções práticas.
In Brazilian Portuguese, the translation may sound more natural as:
Além de assumir a responsabilidade por suas ações, ele também oferece soluções práticas.
4. “Only after…”
The expression reach an agreement means chegar a um acordo. When a sentence begins with only after, inversion usually occurs in the main clause.
Only after several meetings did the two companies reach an agreement.
Somente depois de várias reuniões as duas empresas chegaram a um acordo.
Another example:
Only after reading the full report did she make an informed decision.
Somente depois de ler o relatório completo ela tomou uma decisão bem fundamentada.
The collocation make an informed decision means tomar uma decisão bem fundamentada.
5. “Hardly had…”
The pattern hardly … when means that one event happened almost immediately before another. It is commonly used with collocations such as begin a meeting and start raining.
Hardly had the meeting begun when the fire alarm went off.
Mal a reunião havia começado quando o alarme de incêndio disparou.
Hardly had we left the house when it started raining heavily.
Mal havíamos saído de casa quando começou a chover forte.
The collocation heavy rain is translated as chuva forte, not usually as “chuva pesada.”
6. “No sooner had…”
The structure no sooner … than has a similar meaning to hardly … when. It describes two events that happened one immediately after the other.
No sooner had the flight taken off than the passengers felt severe turbulence.
Mal o voo havia decolado quando os passageiros sentiram uma forte turbulência.
No sooner had she made a promise than she regretted it.
Mal ela fez uma promessa quando se arrependeu.
The collocation make a promise means fazer uma promessa, while feel severe turbulence means sentir uma forte turbulência.
Conditional inversion
In formal English, conditional sentences can also use inversion. The word if is omitted, and the auxiliary or modal verb comes before the subject.
“Had I known…”
Had I known about the traffic, I would have left earlier.
Se eu soubesse do trânsito, teria saído mais cedo.
The collocation leave earlier means sair mais cedo.
“Should you need…”
Should you need further assistance, please contact our support team.
Caso você precise de mais assistência, entre em contato com nossa equipe de suporte.
The collocation "need further" assistance means "precisar de mais assistência".
“Were I to…”
Were I to accept the offer, I would have to relocate.
Se eu aceitasse a oferta, teria que me mudar.
The collocation "accept an offer" means "aceitar uma oferta", while "relocate" means "mudar-se" or "se realocar".
How to form an inverted sentence
Use these steps:
Identify the negative or restrictive expression, such as never, rarely, only after or not only.
Move that expression to the beginning of the sentence.
Place the auxiliary verb before the subject.
If there is no auxiliary verb, add do, does or did.
Keep the collocation unchanged whenever possible.
Example:
Normal sentence: She rarely takes responsibility for her mistakes.
Inverted sentence: Rarely does she take responsibility for her mistakes.
Translation: Raramente ela assume a responsabilidade por seus erros.
Notice that "take responsibility" remains together as a collocation, although its form changes from takes to take because it follows does.
Important note
Inversion is more common in formal writing, speeches, literature, news reports and emphatic statements. In everyday conversation, the normal word order is usually more natural:
I have never seen this before.
Nunca vi isso antes.
More formal and emphatic:
Never have I seen this before.
Nunca vi isso antes.
Learning collocations together with inversion helps you write English that is both grammatically correct and natural. The key is to recognize the fixed word combinations—such as make a decision, pay attention, take responsibility and reach an agreement—and then apply the inverted word order when the sentence begins with an emphatic expression.
Colocações em frases invertidas
O que são colocações?
Collocations, ou colocações, são combinações de palavras que aparecem com frequência juntas em inglês. Elas soam naturais para os falantes nativos porque essas palavras são usadas regularmente como um grupo.
Exemplos:
make a decision — tomar uma decisão
take responsibility — assumir a responsabilidade
heavy rain — chuva forte
deeply concerned — profundamente preocupado
pay attention — prestar atenção
Uma colocação nem sempre é traduzida palavra por palavra. Por exemplo, make a decision significa literalmente “fazer uma decisão”, mas a tradução natural em português brasileiro é tomar uma decisão.
O que são frases invertidas?
Uma frase invertida altera a ordem usual das palavras. Em uma frase normal em inglês, o sujeito geralmente vem antes do verbo:
I have never seen such a beautiful place.
Eu nunca vi um lugar tão bonito.
Em uma frase invertida, um verbo auxiliar vem antes do sujeito. Essa estrutura é frequentemente usada para dar ênfase ou em contextos formais. Por exemplo:
Never have I seen such a beautiful place.
Nunca vi um lugar tão bonito.
Depois de expressões negativas ou restritivas, como never, rarely, seldom, hardly, only e not only, o inglês geralmente usa a inversão para dar ênfase.
Colocações comuns em frases invertidas
1. “Never have I…” — “Nunca…”
A expressão have never seen é uma colocação comum. Na forma invertida, never vai para o início da frase, seguido de have e do sujeito.
Never have I seen such a crowded stadium.
Nunca vi um estádio tão lotado.
Never have we experienced such strong winds.
Nunca passamos por ventos tão fortes.
A colocação experience strong winds significa passar por ventos fortes ou vivenciar ventos fortes.
2. “Rarely do…” — “Raramente…”
A colocação pay attention significa prestar atenção. Como o verbo principal está no presente simples e não há um verbo auxiliar, usamos do na estrutura invertida.
Rarely do students pay attention to small details.
Raramente os alunos prestam atenção aos pequenos detalhes.
Rarely does he make a serious mistake.
Raramente ele comete um erro grave.
Lembre-se de que, depois de do ou does, o verbo principal permanece em sua forma básica:
Rarely does she make mistakes.
Raramente ela comete erros.
Não:
Rarely does she makes mistakes.
3. “Not only does…” — “Não apenas…”
A estrutura not only … but also … conecta duas ideias relacionadas. Ela é frequentemente usada com as colocações make progress e take responsibility.
Em português brasileiro, a tradução pode soar mais natural da seguinte forma:
Além de assumir a responsabilidade por suas ações, ele também oferece soluções práticas.
4. “Only after…” — “Somente depois de…”
A expressão reach an agreement significa chegar a um acordo. Quando uma frase começa com only after, geralmente ocorre inversão na oração principal.
Only after several meetings did the two companies reach an agreement.
Somente depois de várias reuniões as duas empresas chegaram a um acordo.
Outro exemplo:
Only after reading the full report did she make an informed decision.
Somente depois de ler o relatório completo ela tomou uma decisão bem fundamentada.
A colocação make an informed decision significa tomar uma decisão bem fundamentada.
5. “Hardly had…” — “Mal…”
O padrão hardly … when indica que um acontecimento ocorreu quase imediatamente antes de outro. Ele é frequentemente usado com colocações como begin a meeting e start raining.
Hardly had the meeting begun when the fire alarm went off.
Mal a reunião havia começado quando o alarme de incêndio disparou.
Hardly had we left the house when it started raining heavily.
Mal havíamos saído de casa quando começou a chover forte.
A colocação heavy rain é traduzida como chuva forte, e não geralmente como “chuva pesada”.
6. “No sooner had…” — “Mal…”
A estrutura no sooner … than tem significado semelhante a hardly … when. Ela descreve dois acontecimentos que ocorreram imediatamente um após o outro.
No sooner had the flight taken off than the passengers felt severe turbulence.
Mal o voo havia decolado quando os passageiros sentiram uma forte turbulência.
No sooner had she made a promise than she regretted it.
Mal ela fez uma promessa quando se arrependeu.
A colocação make a promise significa fazer uma promessa, enquanto feel severe turbulence significa sentir uma forte turbulência.
Inversão em frases condicionais
No inglês formal, as frases condicionais também podem usar inversão. A palavra if é omitida, e o verbo auxiliar ou modal vem antes do sujeito.
“Had I known…” — “Se eu soubesse…”
Had I known about the traffic, I would have left earlier.
Se eu soubesse do trânsito, teria saído mais cedo.
A colocação leave earlier significa sair mais cedo.
“Should you need…” — “Caso você precise…”
Should you need further assistance, please contact our support team.
Caso você precise de mais assistência, entre em contato com nossa equipe de suporte.
A colocação need further assistance significa precisar de mais assistência.
“Were I to…” — “Se eu…”
Were I to accept the offer, I would have to relocate.
Se eu aceitasse a oferta, teria que me mudar.
A colocação accept an offer significa aceitar uma oferta, enquanto relocate significa mudar-se ou se realocar.
Como formar uma frase invertida
Siga estas etapas:
Identifique a expressão negativa ou restritiva, como never, rarely, only after ou not only.
Coloque essa expressão no início da frase.
Coloque o verbo auxiliar antes do sujeito.
Se não houver verbo auxiliar, acrescente do, does ou did.
Mantenha a colocação inalterada sempre que possível.
Exemplo:
Frase normal:
She rarely takes responsibility for her mistakes.
Ela raramente assume a responsabilidade por seus erros.
Frase invertida:
Rarely does she take responsibility for her mistakes.
Raramente ela assume a responsabilidade por seus erros.
Observe que take responsibility permanece junto como uma colocação, embora sua forma mude de takes para take, porque o verbo vem depois de does.
Observação importante
A inversão é mais comum na escrita formal, em discursos, na literatura, em reportagens e em declarações enfáticas. Na conversa cotidiana, a ordem normal das palavras geralmente soa mais natural:
I have never seen this before.
Nunca vi isso antes.
Uma forma mais formal e enfática seria:
Never have I seen this before.
Nunca vi isso antes.
Aprender colocações juntamente com a inversão ajuda você a escrever em inglês de maneira gramaticalmente correta e natural. O ponto principal é reconhecer as combinações fixas de palavras, como make a decision, pay attention, take responsibility e reach an agreement, e depois aplicar a ordem invertida quando a frase começar com uma expressão de ênfase.

The Importance of English-Portuguese and Portuguese-English Collocation Dictionaries in the Twenty-First Century
In the twenty-first century, communication between people from different countries has become more important than ever. English and Portuguese are widely spoken languages, and many students, professionals, translators, teachers, and researchers need to move between them accurately and naturally. In this context, English-Portuguese and Portuguese-English collocation dictionaries are valuable linguistic tools.
Collocations are combinations of words that commonly occur together, such as “make a decision” in English or “tomar uma decisão” in Portuguese. Knowing individual words is not always enough to communicate naturally. A learner may understand the meaning of a word but still use it incorrectly with another word. Collocation dictionaries help users discover these natural combinations and avoid common mistakes caused by direct translation.
These dictionaries are especially important in education. Students can use them to improve their vocabulary, writing, speaking, and reading skills. Teachers can also use them to prepare lessons and help learners develop more natural language habits. For translators and interpreters, collocation dictionaries are essential because they provide equivalents that reflect how words are actually used in each language rather than simply giving literal translations.
In the modern globalized world, English-Portuguese communication is present in business, tourism, science, technology, international education, and digital media. Reliable collocation dictionaries can therefore contribute to clearer and more effective communication between Portuguese-speaking and English-speaking communities. Digital versions also make this information faster and easier to access.
In conclusion, English-Portuguese and Portuguese-English collocation dictionaries have an important role in language learning and communication in the twenty-first century. They go beyond simple word-to-word translation by showing how words naturally function together. As international communication continues to grow, these dictionaries remain valuable resources for anyone who wants to use English or Portuguese accurately, fluently, and naturally.
